Japanese press blasted<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An 82 year-old Japanese military veteran has
\ncriticized his country's newspapers for overexposing riots in
\nIndonesia, saying the coverage may tarnish the Soeharto
\ngovernment's image.<\/p>\n
Shizuo Miyamoto, deputy president of Nihon Indonesia Kyokai
\n(the Indonesia-Japan Friendship Organization), said the culprits
\nwere the major dailies Asahi Shimbun and Mainichi Shimbun.<\/p>\n
Miyamoto accused the dailies of dramatizing the series of
\nriots that rocked Indonesia recently.<\/p>\n
\"The ugly reports on Indonesia in Japanese papers are then
\nblown up by the Japanese Communist Party which hates the New
\nOrder government for its staunch anti-Communist stance,\" Miyamoto
\nsaid, as quoted by Antara yesterday.<\/p>\n
Miyamoto, who was the commander of Japanese troops in Java
\nduring World War II, said he was anti-Communist and claimed to
\nhave good relations with two of Indonesia's founding fathers,
\nSukarno and Moh. Hatta.<\/p>\n
He said reports made by another Japanese paper, Yomiuri
\nShimbun, were more neutral compared to the two.<\/p>\n
Miyamoto said, he had sent a letter to Yomiuri Simbun in
\nappreciation of the paper's reports, which he said provided
\nbalanced information and insight into the present situation in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
According to Miyamoto, successive riots rocking Indonesia
\nrecently are \"normal and natural\" for a country which is
\ndeveloping into an industrial nation. (08)<\/p>",
