Japanese loan for environment<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Mitsui Corporation of Japan is expected to
\ndisburse part of a US$100 million loan it pledged for the
\nimprovement of environmental conservation in Indonesia, an
\nofficial said on Friday.<\/p>\n
Secretary of Tangerang's Development Planning Agency Roestiwi
\nsaid part of the loan would be given to the Tangerang mayoralty.<\/p>\n
The preliminary steps for the disbursement of the loan, called
\nthe Yen Credit for Environment, were disclosed during a recent
\nvisit to Tangerang by the corporation's executives.<\/p>\n
\"The executives said they would distribute the loan for
\nenvironmental programs in several regions in the country,
\nincluding Tangerang,\" she said.<\/p>\n
She said that during a meeting with local officials, the
\nexecutives said the mayoralty was chosen as one of the recipients
\nof the loan because many factories were operating in Tangerang,
\ncausing several environmental problems in the mayoralty.<\/p>\n
According to the executives, the loan recipients should be
\nable to repay the loan within 30 years, she said, adding
\nrecipients should also have the ability to prevent environmental
\nproblems and restore the environment.<\/p>\n
Roestiwi said Tangerang-owned tap water firm PDAM Tangerang
\nwas proposed as a loan recipient because the firm had the ability
\nto treat environmental problems.<\/p>\n
She said the firm also could repay the loan.<\/p>\n
With the loan, the firm is expected to improve its ability to
\nmanage the environment, particularly to protect rivers from
\nindustrial waste, she said.<\/p>\n
A local environmental agency found at least 172 companies
\nillegally dumped wastewater into the mayoralty's rivers. (41\/jun)<\/p>",
