        "content": "<p>Japanese coffee buyers face supply shortages<\/p>\n<p>TOKYO (Reuters): Japanese coffee bean buyers may face a supply<br>\nshortage if Indonesia's political upheaval causes further delays<br>\nin shipments ahead of the peak demand season for coffee, traders<br>\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Unless the situation in Indonesia calms down within the next<br>\nweek or two, we will face a serious situation,\" said a trader at<br>\na leading trading house.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are closely watching the situation in Indonesia as Japan<br>\nhas a substantial amount of coffee bean contracts with the<br>\ncountry,\" the trader said.<\/p>\n<p>Traders said expected delays in shipments from Indonesia, hit<br>\nby a political turmoil after 32 years of President Soeharto's<br>\nruling, might further tighten robust coffee supplies in Japan,<br>\nthe world's third-largest coffee consumer.<\/p>\n<p>A drought in Indonesia has already delayed the arrival of new<br>\ncrop coffee bean supplies, causing Japanese warehouse stocks to<br>\nfall well below the 70,000-80,000 ton level which industry<br>\nsources regard as the adequate level.<\/p>\n<p>Japan's warehouse stocks of coffee beans at the end of March<br>\ntotaled 58,368 tons, down 12.9 percent from the same month a year<br>\nearlier, the Agriculture Ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia is the second-largest supplier of coffee beans to<br>\nJapan in terms of volume, exporting 67,615 tons to Japan in 1997,<br>\naccording to Finance Ministry data.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia supplies robusta coffee beans, which account for<br>\nabout 30 percent of Japan's total coffee demand.<\/p>\n<p>\"Japanese roasters may be forced to cut production if the<br>\nsituation does not improve,\" another trading house trader said.<\/p>\n<p>\"Coffee production (in Japan) in June and July is usually the<br>\nhighest throughout the year as demand for chilled coffee grows<br>\nduring the summer,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Traders said they were deeply concerned about Indonesian<br>\nsupplies, though so far they had not heard of significant delays<br>\nin shipments or any defaults as a result of the turmoil.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman of major coffee roaster, UCC Ueshima Coffee Ltd<br>\nsaid: \"It is inevitable the situation in Indonesia, which appears<br>\nto be serious, will hamper coffee bean shipments and export<br>\nprocedures.\"<\/p>\n<p>Traders said if the upheaval in Indonesian was protracted,<br>\nJapanese traders would need to seek substitutes, probably from<br>\nVietnam which also supplies robusta coffee.<\/p>",
