        "content": "<p>Japanese author convicted in Thailand<\/p>\n<p>THAILAND: A Thai court has convicted a Japanese author of<br>\ninsulting the monarchy under the kingdom&apos;s strict lese majeste<br>\nlaws and handed him an 18-month suspended sentence, a court<br>\nofficial said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Koshi Takahashi, 69, was charged with lese majeste against<br>\nQueen Sirikit and Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn in May, the<br>\nofficial said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Nation newspaper, Takahashi was charged over<br>\nhis 2001 Japanese-language book on rural life in the northern<br>\ncity of Chiang Mai, which insulted the Queen and Crown Prince.<br>\nThe book was distributed in Thailand and Japan.<\/p>\n<p>The royal family is highly revered in Thailand and the lese<br>\nmajeste laws are strictly enforced, although violations of the<br>\nlaw are rare.
