Japanese aid<\/p>\n
State Minister of National Development Planning\/Chairman of
\nthe National Planning Board, Ginandjar Kartasasmita, was in Tokyo
\nlast Wednesday to find out how much aid Indonesia can expect from
\nthe Japanese government. This was necessary because of the
\nJapanese government's recently announced intention of reducing
\nits Official Development Assistance 10 percent. Our government
\nhopes this will not reduce Japan's aid to Indonesia.<\/p>\n
It is of course possible that the Japanese government may
\nrescind its decision. But we must keep in mind that it is an
\ninternal decision, and would have been made after due
\nconsideration. It would be difficult for the Japanese to repeal
\nit now that the announcement has been made. We hope Indonesia
\nwill get the same amount as before. But we must remember that
\nother aid receiving countries will have the same hopes, and will
\nmake the same efforts as Indonesia.<\/p>\n
In the face of Japan's decision we must revert back to our
\nlong-held basic principle that foreign aid should merely
\nsupplement our development resources. The decision teaches us
\nthat we must be more self-confident, and more prudent in our
\ndevelopment, because all this will impact on the well-being of
\nour future generations.<\/p>\n
