        "content": "<p>Japan urged to join EAEC<\/p>\n<p>TOKYO (AFP): Japan's most influential business group is<br>\nconsidering plans to urge the government to endorse a Malaysian<br>\nplan for an East Asian Economic Caucus (EAEC), news reports said<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The reports said the Japan Federation of Economic<br>\nOrganizations (Keidanren) wanted to clarify its position before<br>\nsending trade missions to the six members of the Association of<br>\nSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Vietnam next year.<\/p>\n<p>Fears of alienating the United States, its biggest trading<br>\npartner, have kept Japan from endorsing the EAEC plan, which is<br>\nbased on a proposal made by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir<br>\nMohamad four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The EAEC would group the East Asian members of the five-year-<br>\nold Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum but exclude<br>\nother members such as the United States and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia's International Trade and Industry Minister Rafidah<br>\nAziz recently voiced frustration with Japan's policy of sitting<br>\non the fence.<\/p>",
