Japan to help stop oil spills<\/p>\n
UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: Japan is eager to assist in
\nefforts to stop oil spills and pollution in the Makassar Straits
\ncaused by ship accidents, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
\"The Makassar Straits is an alternate route for Japanese
\ntankers to transport oil from Saudi Arabia,\" a local
\ntransportation official, Subarman, said here yesterday.<\/p>\n
Japan was involved in joint training exercises in response to
\nsea pollution under the name \"Marpolex\" (Maritime Pollution
\nExercise) in Ujungpandang waters yesterday.<\/p>\n
The exercises were joined by rescue teams, and sea pollution
\nteams from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan which used 10
\nships, two helicopters and a Falcon aircraft.<\/p>\n
Ships designed to handle oil spills use \"oil boom\" technology.
\nThey can localize the oil, separate it from the sea water and
\nthen absorb it.<\/p>\n
\"If there is a tanker ship accident, we could save the crew
\nand at the same time minimize the possibility of an oil spill,\"
\nSubarman said.<\/p>\n
Japan joined Marpolex in 1995. Joint training exercises are
\nheld every two years.<\/p>\n
Besides the joint exercises, the authorities have also been
\ninstalling navigation guides in the Makassar Straits to avoid
