Japan to aid RI over environment<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Japan will offer an aid package to help Indonesia and
\nsix other Asian countries lower greenhouse gas emissions and stem
\nglobal warming over the next few years.<\/p>\n
Environment ministry official Soichiro Seki said Tokyo's
\nproposal would mostly consist of training and joint research
\nprojects in antipollution measures for Indonesia, China, India,
\nMalaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.<\/p>\n
Details are to be worked out in talks with each country after
\nthe plan is unveiled at the World Summit on Sustainable
\nDevelopment in Johannesburg, South Africa, later this month, Seki
\nsaid. He declined to say how much Tokyo planned to spend.<\/p>\n
Environmental issues are expected to figure prominently in
\ndiscussions at the conference, which aims to combat poverty and
\npromote economic growth in developing nations.<\/p>\n
With its proposal, Japan hopes to win credit for cutting back
\ngreenhouse gases that would put it closer to its own emissions
\nreduction targets under the 1997 Kyoto protocol.<\/p>\n
The international accord, negotiated in Japan, commits
\nindustrialized countries to reduce heat-trapping gases blamed for
\nwarming Earth's atmosphere. Nations that sign on agree to roll
\nback emissions to 1990 levels.<\/p>\n
Fifteen European Union countries formally signed the Kyoto
\nprotocol in May and Japan ratified the accord in June. The United
\nStates opposes the accord, calling it too burdensome for American
