        "content": "<p>Japan raises aid for Timor<\/p>\n<p>TOKYO (AP): Japan said Thursday it will contribute US$100<br>\nmillion to an international aid package designed to help East<br>\nTimor recover from the brutal end of Indonesian rule.<\/p>\n<p>The funds are part of a three-year, $307 million aid package<br>\nthat international donors are assembling during a two-day meeting<br>\nin Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Ministry official Shinichi Mizuta said Japan's new aid<br>\ncomes on top of a total of $194 million it has already pledged<br>\ntoward East Timor's reconstruction.<\/p>\n<p>That total includes $100 million that went to a United Nations<br>\ntrust fund for the multinational peacekeeping force operating in<br>\nEast Timor.<\/p>\n<p>East Timorese overwhelmingly voted to secede from Indonesia in<br>\na U.N.-supervised ballot Aug. 30.<\/p>\n<p>The result triggered a wave of violence and destruction by<br>\nanti-independence militia gangs. Many claim they were organized<br>\nand armed by the Indonesian military.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia ruled the former Portuguese colony for 24 years.<\/p>",
