        "content": "<p>Tokyo (ANTARA) - The Japanese government is considering exporting\nType 88 surface-to-ship missile systems to the Philippines, a source\nfamiliar with the matter said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The move follows Tokyo\u2019s revision in April of the three principles on\ndefence equipment and technology transfer, as well as its implementation\nguidelines, which eased restrictions on the export of lethal\nweapons.<\/p>\n<p>Japan and the Philippines are working to strengthen security ties\namid China\u2019s increasing assertiveness in the East China Sea and the\nSouth China Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi told reporters\non Friday that \u201cno decision has been made at this time\u201d regarding the\npossible export of the missiles.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the agreement on enhanced defence equipment and\ntechnology cooperation reached in Manila on May 5 with his Philippine\ncounterpart, Gilberto Teodoro, Koizumi stated his intention to decide on\nthe equipment to be exported.<\/p>\n<p>On May 6, the Japan Self-Defence Forces conducted a live-fire\nexercise using the Type 88 missile system during the annual Balikatan\nexercise between the United States and the Philippines in the\nPhilippines.<\/p>\n<p>Japan and the Philippines are also in intensive discussions regarding\nthe export of decommissioned Abukuma-class destroyers.<\/p>\n<p>Japan is also considering exporting the Type 03 medium-range\nsurface-to-air missile system, also known as Chu-SAM, which is used by\nthe Japan Ground Self-Defence Forces.<\/p>\n<p>Source: Kyodo-OANA<\/p>",
