        "content": "<p>Japan, ASEAN mull trade pact<\/p>\n<p>TOKYO (AFP): Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian<br>\nNations (ASEAN) will launch a study group next week to consider a<br>\nfree trade agreement, a report said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>It is hoped that the agreement could enable Japan and ASEAN to<br>\ncompete with China and regional trading blocs in Europe, the<br>\nUnited States and South America, Kyodo news agency said quoting<br>\ngovernment sources.<\/p>\n<p>The study group comprises government economic experts and is<br>\nexpected to submit its proposals to respective trade ministers by<br>\nthe end of this year.<\/p>\n<p>Japan is currently in talks with Singapore to conclude a free<br>\ntrade agreement by the end of this year. Japan has previously<br>\nfavored multilateral trade pacts such as the World Trade<br>\nOrganization.<\/p>\n<p>The deal with Singapore would be Japan's first free trade<br>\nagreement.<\/p>\n<p>The 10-member ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos,<br>\nMalaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and<br>\nVietnam.<\/p>",
