        "content": "<p>The forest and land fire task force (Satgas Karhutla) together with\ndisaster-resilient village community groups (Destana) in Jambi is\nimplementing a containment strategy to prevent fires from spreading\nfurther. \u201cThe fire is under control. At the moment our colleagues from\nDestana, the sub-district fire brigade and colleagues from nearby\ncompanies are able to control the flames; only cooling remains,\u201d said\nRawasari Village Head Abdul Rokib at the fire location in Berbak\nDistrict, Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency, on Wednesday. He said that\nwithout containment measures, the fire could spread rapidly and become\nincreasingly uncontrollable. The containment effort is being carried out\nby digging the ground using two units of heavy equipment provided by\ncompanies holding land concessions around the fire area. \u201cWe continue to\nfocus on extinguishing the fire via land routes using available water;\nwe are involving everyone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Berbak Sub-district Head Nopi Ardiansyah said the first fire report\nwas received from the local village head, Manggala Agni, and Destana on\nSunday (25\/8) at around 3.30 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. The burned\nland is a combination of residents\u2019 oil palm plantations and\nuncultivated scrubland. \u201cLast night firefighting was temporarily halted\nat around 9 p.m. because the terrain conditions did not allow it.\nHowever, before it was halted, officers had carried out containment\nusing excavators to cut off the spread of the fire,\u201d he explained. He\nsaid firefighting efforts from the first day until now have involved a\njoint team from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), Destana, the\nsub-district fire brigade, Manggala Agni, the Regional Disaster\nManagement Agency (BPBD), plantation companies and local residents.<\/p>\n<p>Although the number of personnel involved is quite large, officers in\nthe field are currently facing obstacles, such as water sources being\nlocated quite far from the fire hotspots, making the cooling process\ndifficult. Strong winds can also produce thick smoke and trigger new\nhotspots. \u201cThe community here is quite responsive in helping with\nfirefighting. We have received additional manpower from companies and\nBPBD, who are now on their way here to help,\u201d the sub-district head\nconcluded.<\/p>\n<p>Tanjung Jabung Timur Deputy Regent Muslimin Tanja previously said\nthat during the period from January to August, the number of hotspots in\nhis area reached 135. The highest number of hotspots occurred during\nAugust, with 53 recorded. As a result of the dry season, the burned area\nhas reached 108 hectares, all within peatland areas. \u201cOf the 514,000\nhectares of land area in Tanjung Jabung Timur, 56 per cent is peatland,\nwhich is very vulnerable. The presence of the minister (24\/8) is\nexpected to serve as motivation that the government\u2019s attention is truly\npresent,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
