Jakarta's history important, says Surjadi Soedirdja<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said he wanted
\nJakarta to become a city which reflected on its history.<\/p>\n
"A good city is one which can talk about its history," Surjadi
\nsaid yesterday when opening a seminar on renovating old cities.<\/p>\n
But Surjadi said it was hard to maintain the city's historical
\nfeatures because it involved controlling the private sector which
\ndominated the city's development.<\/p>\n
He said developers should not just copy the architecture of
\nother countries' buildings.<\/p>\n
"We want the city to have its own characteristics" to make it
\nattractive for its citizens and tourists, Surjadi said.<\/p>\n
The seminar, an exchange between city planners and officials,
\nruns until Friday and is organized by the city's renovation
\nagency and the private Tarumanegara University.<\/p>\n
Participants are from 12 cities including Jakarta, Medan in
\nNorth Sumatra, Ujungpandang in South Sulawesi and Singaraja in
\nBali.<\/p>\n
Speakers at yesterday's session included Wisnu Murti Ardjo
\nfrom the city's renovation agency. Today, Adjie Damais from the
\ncity's museum and history agency will speak at the seminar.<\/p>\n
The head of the city's architecture team, M. Danisworo, will
\nalso speak.<\/p>\n
Organizers said the seminar aimed to socialize several laws
\nand rules which supported historical site preservation. These
\nincluded the 1992 law on artifacts.<\/p>\n
The talks will also discuss regulation enforcement
\nconstraints in big cities.<\/p>\n
The issues specifically related to historical preservation are
\nproperty investment and urban land planning.<\/p>\n
The city has launched a project to revitalize downtown Kota
\nand other historical sites. The plans for North Jakarta
\nincorporate the renovation and preservation of the old Fish
\nMarket and the Sunda Kelapa port area. (02\/anr)<\/p>",
