Jakarta's garbage problem<\/p>\n

Jakarta's garbage averages 21,000 cubic meters a day. Fifteen
\npercent of that, i.e. 4,000 to 5,000 cubic meters, remains
\nuncollected. The accumulation of garbage is a growing problem for
\nthe Jakarta Administration.<\/p>\n
The uncollected garbage, however, is processed by the Public
\nWorks office into fertilizer or disappears naturally and turns
\ninto soil.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, if the garbage is left to accumulate, it will
\nbecome an acute problem for environmental sanitation. The
\naccumulation of garbage is partly due to an increasing number of
\ngarbage trucks breaking down.<\/p>\n
Moreover, I have observed that the handling of garbage in
\nJakarta is far from effective and efficient. It is still very
\ntraditional.<\/p>\n
Some time ago, the Jakarta Administration launched
\nsophisticated trucks which could process the garbage into compact
\npackages. A pity that many of these expensive trucks are in
\ndisrepair due to lack of maintenance.<\/p>\n
One important thing to be solved in garbage handling in
\nJakarta and other cities is the quality of cleaning personnel.
\nThis does not mean that they are not dedicated. Their dedication
\nis high. The problem is in the understanding and mastery of
\ntechnology.<\/p>\n
With some funds and training, they will become a reliable task
\nforce for the control of environmental cleanliness. Support and
\nunderstanding from the community is also needed. For example.
\npeople should be willing to spend some money to buy plastic bags
\nfor household garbage to avoid it scattering everywhere.<\/p>\n
