Jakarta's four DPD members launches antigraft campaign<\/p>\n

The four members of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD)
\nrepresenting Jakarta have launched a pilot anti-corruption
\ncampaign, distributing 50,000 posters asking the public to report
\nto them alleged graft in the regional administrations.<\/p>\n
Jakarta residents can inform the four councillors, Sarwono
\nKusumaatmadja, Mooryati Soedibyo, Marwan Batubara and Biem T.
\nBenyamin, by telephone, e-mail, fax or letter.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that this anti-corruption campaign will lift Jakarta
\npeople's spirits in the fight against corruption,\" said Sarwono
\nin his keynote speech to the DPD on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The campaign is sponsored by the Corruption Eradication
\nCommission (KPK) and the Danish government.<\/p>\n
Present at the ceremony were former Jakarta governor Ali
\nSadikin, Governor Sutiyoso, KPK chairman Taufiequrachman Ruki and
\nother DPD members.<\/p>\n
Taufiequrachman said that anti-corruption campaigns using
\nwell-known figures like DPD members would strengthen common
\nefforts to fight graft.<\/p>\n
He said the cooperation with the DPD members from Jakarta was
\npart of a trial project, which would be followed up others
\ninvolving DPD members across the country.<\/p>\n
The KPK had already investigated corruption in 44 regional
\nlegislative councils throughout country involving some 1,600
\ncouncillors, he said.<\/p>\n
The role of DPD members in fighting corruption in their
\nconstituencies was strategic because they were relatively
\nindependent figures, Taufiequrachman said.<\/p>\n
Each province has four DPD members, who were directly elected
\nby the public during the legislative election last year. They are
\nnot formally affiliated to any political party.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that our campaign \"Say No to Corruption\" will be more
\neffective because it involves DPD members. The KPK cannot work
\nalone. It is part of our effort to treat corruption as a common
\nenemy,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Ali Sadikin stressed the need for the government to
\nact indiscriminately against those accused of graft.<\/p>\n
It should especially investigate those who were involved in
\ncorruption involving large amounts of money, he said.<\/p>\n
\"So far, I have not seen law enforcement agencies taking big
\ncorruptors to court. They are only focusing on small corruption
\ncases.\"<\/p>\n
The 50,000 posters with pictures of the four DPD members on
\nthem will be posted in public places like hospitals, post
\noffices, health centers, bus and train stations, places of
\nworship and community unit offices.<\/p>\n
They would include contact detail for each DPD member but
\nwould not, however, post their cell phone numbers.<\/p>\n
The DPD members were, of course, expected to follow up public
\nreports about corruption, Taufiequrachman said.<\/p>\n
\"If there is a criminal aspect (to the offending), they
\nshould report their findings to the KPK.\"<\/p>",
