The Jakarta administration, under Governor Sutiyoso, is trying
\nto turn Jakarta into a city without slums.<\/p>\n
It is also trying to ease acute traffic congestion in the
\ncapital city by introducing a mass rapid transportation system,
\nknown as the busway.<\/p>\n
Of course, the Jakarta administration can build hundreds of
\nhigh-rise buildings, overpasses and busway lanes but it must
\nnever forget that problems facing poor people in Jakarta must be
\nsolved properly to pave the way for these development
\nundertakings. The Jakarta administration should stop bulldozing
\nthe homes of some of its residents in the name of development at
\nthe expense of some of its residents, who have often shed blood
\nin defending their rights.<\/p>\n
Jakarta does not need a facelift. The problems that it
\ncurrently faces must be solved properly and patiently before
\nanything can be done to beautify it.<\/p>\n
