Jakartans prefer industrial transmigration<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said that Jakartans
\nshould be trained and sent to other provinces in Indonesia as
\nindustrial transmigrants rather than asking them to join the
\ntraditional transmigration programs.<\/p>\n
\"The fact is that most Jakartans are not familiar with
\nagriculture because they have never worked in that field before.
\nTherefore it's better to send them as industrial transmigrants,\"
\nSoedirdja said yesterday when he saw off Jakartans departing for
\nresettlement areas in Aceh.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said that Jakarta has signed a series of agreements
\nwith a number of provinces, including Riau, Central Sulawesi,
\nSouth and Central Kalimantan. The agreement states that Jakarta
\nwill regularly send industrial transmigrants to the areas.<\/p>\n
\"We will train the would-be transmigrants before sending them
\nto resettlement sites,\" Surjadi said, adding that Jakartans are
\nworking in Riau in the house appliances industry and in Central
\nSulawesi they are working in food the industry.<\/p>\n
Surjadi attributed the small number of Jakartans joining the
\ngovernment sponsored transmigration programs to the lack of
\nexperience in agriculture.<\/p>\n
Fifty families, or 203 people, from Jakarta left for a
\ntransmigration site in Aceh with 855 people from Central and East
\nJava.<\/p>\n
They will be resettled in several areas in West Aceh, such as
\nAlue Glumpang, Krueng Tuan and Batas Puteh.<\/p>\n
The city administration plans to send 1600 families to
\ntransmigration sites outside Java in the 1994-1995 fiscal year.<\/p>\n
\"Thus far we have already sent a total of 616 families,\"
\nSurjadi said.<\/p>\n
The head of the Jakarta Transmigration Office,
\nHaryokusumowardhono, said that most Jakartans who join the
\ntransmigration program are poor residents who live in slum areas.<\/p>\n
Governor Soedirja said that transmigration is a way to reduce
\nthe population in the capital city.<\/p>\n
\"Many people come to the city to find a better life but on the
\ncontrary they only pose many problems to the city.\"<\/p>\n
The governor hopes that the population growth will be
\ndecreased from 2,41 percent to two percent because. \"Otherwise
\nthere will be 12 million people living in Jakarta by the year
