Jakarta to host Islam seminar<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A number of experts on Islam, cultural identity,
\nmulticulturalism and politics from Indonesia, the United States,
\nCanada, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore and Pakistan will gather
\nhere for a four-day international conference on Islam, which
\nbegins on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Organized by the International Center for Islam and Pluralism
\n(ICIP), the event will discuss the future of Islam, democracy and
\nauthoritarianism in the Muslim world.<\/p>\n
Canada will be represented by Judith Nagata, a professor of
\nanthropology at Canada's York University. Other speakers will
\ninclude former Indonesian president Abdurrahman \"Gus Dur\" Wahid,
\nAzyumardi Azra, Datu Michael O. Matsura, M. Khalid Masud, Amin
\nSaikal and Patricia Martinez.<\/p>\n
In a press statement responding to Nagata's participation in
\nthe conference, Canadian Ambassador Randolph Mank said the event
\nwould contribute a lot to the dialog and exchange of ideas on
\npluralism, tolerance and democracy, which the embassy had long
