        "content": "<p>Jakarta to host int'l telecom expo, meeting<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): An international telecommunications exhibition,<br>\ncalled Asia-Pacific Telecom '97, will be held from Nov. 29 to<br>\nDec. 3 at the Jakarta Fairgrounds in Kemayoran.<\/p>\n<p>The event will feature a conference, ministerial roundtable<br>\nand panel discussions, secretary-general of the Ministry of<br>\nTourism, Post and Telecommunications, Jonathan L. Parapak, said.<\/p>\n<p>\"Among topics of discussion will be the controversial<br>\naccounting rates which were reduced unilaterally by the U.S.<br>\nFederal Communications Commission (FCC),\" he said at his office<br>\non Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He said the topic would also be discussed by the International<br>\nTelecommunications Union (ITU) and the World Trade Organization.<\/p>\n<p>The accounting rate is a revenue sharing plan between<br>\ninternational telecommunications operators for calls between two<br>\nnations. Some countries, including Singapore and Japan, have<br>\ncomplained and objected to the FCC for its unilateral cut.<\/p>\n<p>Parapak said 134 telecommunications companies from 20 nations<br>\nhad confirmed their participation at Asia-Pacific Telecom '97.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition will focus on the theme \"Competitiveness<br>\nthrough Multimedia and Wireless Technology in the Global<br>\nInformation Society of the 21st Century\".<\/p>\n<p>Asia-Pacific Telecom '97, which is to be officially opened by<br>\nMinister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave, will<br>\npresent several speakers, including Indonesian Coordinating<br>\nMinister for Production and Distribution Hartarto, Singaporean<br>\nMinister of Communications Mah Bow Tan and Australian Minister of<br>\nCommunications and the Arts Richard Alston.<\/p>\n<p>Companies which will participate in the exhibition include<br>\nAlcatel, Nokia, Lucent Technologies, PT Pasifik Satelit<br>\nNusantara, PT Satelindo PT Telkom, PT Indosat, France Telecom,<br>\nPTT Nederland and Siemens.<\/p>\n<p>In a related development, state-owned Telkom will hold a<br>\nseminar on \"The harmonization between human resources and<br>\ntechnology\" from Nov. 12 to Nov. 13 in Bandung, West Java.<\/p>\n<p>Some 400 participants are expected to attend the two-day<br>\nevent.
