JAKARTA: The City Council urged Governor Sutiyoso on Thursday
\nto reject a proposal to demolish the Candra Naya building,
\nstressing that it was the city administration's responsibility to
\nprotect the city's cultural heritage.<\/p>\n
\"Such a building is protected by law, therefore if the city
\nadministration allows its demolition we will take legal action,\"
\nsaid Audi Tambunan, a member of the council's Commission E for
\npublic welfare.<\/p>\n
Candra Naya is thought to be the oldest surviving example of
\nChinese architecture in the country. The owner of the property
\nwants to demolish the building and develop the property. A
\nreplica of the Candra Naya would be built at Taman Mini Indonesia
\nIndah in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Opponents to the plan include those working to save the city's
\nheritage, the city culture and museum agency and the Office of
\nthe State Minister for Culture and Tourism.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso has yet to announce his stance on the issue, saying
\nhe will consult with officials in the city administration before

Batavia Portico replica planned<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A replica of a 17th century gate, the Batavia Portico,
\nwill be constructed at the entrance of the Fish Market in West
\nJakarta, near the Museum Bahari, a city official said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Candrian Atahyat, head of the supervisory department at the
\nCulture and Museum Agency, said his agency would discuss the plan
\nwith shop owners whose stores occupy the proposed location for
\nthe portico.<\/p>\n
He said the shops' permits expired in 2005, after which the
\narea would be cleared for the Batavia Portico.<\/p>\n
The gate was originally made in the 17th century in the
\nNetherlands. However, it never reached Jakarta because the ship
\ncarrying it, the Batavia, sank off the coast of western
\nAustralian in 1629.<\/p>\n
In 1962, the Batavia was found along with its cargo, including
\nthe gate, which was later displayed at the Geraldton Museum in
\nwestern Australia.<\/p>\n
\"We are trying to get the gate back here,\" Candrian said.

Council demands heritage building be restored<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The City Council has demanded that the original
\nornaments of a heritage building in Menteng be located and
\nreinstalled during the building's renovation.<\/p>\n
The building, which was purchased by the city administration
\nfor Rp 28 billion (approximately US$3.37 million), is a former
\nimmigration office. It is located at Jl. Teuku Umar No. 1 in
\nMenteng, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The spokesman for the council's Commission E for people's
\nwelfare, Nazamuddin, said on Sunday the council only approved the
\npurchase on the condition that the original ornaments be found
\nand reinstalled.<\/p>\n
He also demanded that the city administration elaborate on the
\nwhereabouts of the ornaments, considering that renovation work on
\nthe building was about to begin.<\/p>\n
The administration has claimed that the ornaments are in the
\npossession of a collector, who has promised to turn them over
\nonce renovation of the building gets under way, according to
\nNazamuddin, who does not know the name of the collector.<\/p>\n
The building, the first structure in Indonesia to use
\nreinforced concrete, was opened in 1914, when it was called the
\nNederland-Indische Kunstring de Batavia (Batavia's circle of
\narts). It will be renovated at the cost of Rp 6.75 billion, which
