Jakarta sets up classes for the exceptionally intelligent<\/p>\n

A search is underway for students with strong intellectual
\ncapabilities in science to study in a special class hosted by state
\nschool SMA 3 in Setiabudi, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Yohanes Surya of the Indonesian Physics Olympiad Foundation
\nsaid that they were looking for 20 to 30 first-year high school
\nstudents to participate in the program that is expected to start
\nlate August.<\/p>\n
"The curriculum will particularly focus on science subjects
\nincluding mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry," Yohanes
\nsaid during the launch of Super DKI Class on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Other subjects, including music, sport, arts and English,
\nwould be taught on weekends.<\/p>\n
The program, which was launched by head of the Jakarta
\nSecondary Education Agency Margani M. Mustar, BMW Indonesia
\npresident director Josef Honsel and Yohanes Surya, aims to
\nprovide an opportunity for outstanding high school students to be
\ntrained as candidates for the international science Olympiad.<\/p>\n
Students selected to participate in the class would pay no
\ntuition or other school charges, but would still have to buy
\ntheir own text books.<\/p>\n
Instructors for the program, to be financed by BMW Indonesia,
\nwould be chosen from experienced university lecturers with
\nmaster's degrees.<\/p>\n
Yohanes said as many as 5,000 first-year high school students
\nwould undergo a recruitment test next week to be held at their
\nrespective schools. The test would focus on their capabilities in
\nmathematics and logical thinking.<\/p>\n
Students who obtained a perfect mathematics score in the
\nnational final examination last May are particularly encouraged
\nto join the screening.<\/p>\n
There were around 3,000 junior high school students who got a
\nperfect score of 10 in the national examinations.<\/p>\n
Yohanes said 50 of the best students in this first selection
\nprocess would be interviewed in order to get 20 and 30 students
\nfor the program.<\/p>\n
He added that only students with an IQ of over 150 and who
\nhave extraordinary talent in science would be given the
\nopportunity to attend the Super DKI Class.<\/p>\n
"Under the program, first-year students would take up courses
\nnormally given to students attending bachelor's programs, second-
\nyear students would do courses normally given to master's degree
\nstudents and third-years would study subjects given to doctoral
\nstudents," Yohanes said.<\/p>\n
"It won't burden them too much as they have higher
\ncapabilities compared to average people. We have to challenge
\nthem to maximize their academic potentialities. Hopefully, by
\nthis program, Indonesia will be able to bring home five gold
\nmedals from the International Science Olympiads," explained the
\nlong-time physics international Olympiad instructor.<\/p>\n
Yohanes also said that they were planning to open up similar
\nclasses in other provinces across the country.<\/p>\n
"Ambon has already expressed interest in opening a similar
\nschool in their area, because they think they have many potential
\nstudents in science," he said.<\/p>",
