        "content": "<p>Jakarta promises to be a good host<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja promised<br>\nyesterday that the Indonesian capital will try to be a good host<br>\nfor the 14th National Games which open Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Surjadi however pleaded to visitors, athletes and supporters,<br>\nfor their understanding if not everything goes according to plan.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Shortcomings are common at events this large,&quot; he was quoted<br>\nby Antara as saying.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that Jakarta has been given only three years to<br>\nprepare instead of four because the Games had been brought<br>\nforward one year owing to the general elections and the Southeast<br>\nAsian Games next year.<\/p>\n<p>Surjadi, who chairs the Games&apos; organizing committee, said that<br>\nthere were bound to be problems once the Games got underway, such<br>\nas athletes failing to arrive.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Of course, we will try hard to eliminate this inconvenience,&quot;<br>\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, from Semarang, it was reported that Central Java&apos;s<br>\nbadminton hopes have been dashed because its star, Ardy B.<br>\nWiranata has been sidelined on account of his Hepatitis A.<\/p>\n<p>Soejoto, head of the Central Java chapter of the Badminton<br>\nAssociation of Indonesia confirmed the bad news yesterday, saying<br>\nthat Ardy has been told to rest for three months.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 4,915 athletes from 27 provinces will take part in<br>\nthe Games, which will be opened by President Soeharto on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Contingents from the regions are already arriving in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 509 medals from 35 sports are at stake.<\/p>\n<p>Three sports -- squash, bridge and chess -- will make their<br>\ndebuts at the Games, while motocross, rock-climbing, baseball,<br>\nwushu and skating will be featured as exhibition events.<br>\n(arf\/har)<\/p>",
