JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police have uncovered\n171 theft cases throughout 2026. Of these cases, 103 suspects have been\narrested by the police. Among them, 13 cases originated from reports\nmade through social media.<\/p>\n
The Director of General Criminal Investigation at the Jakarta\nMetropolitan Police, Commissioner Pol Iman Imanudin, detailed that there\nwere 86 cases of aggravated theft, 10 cases of theft with violence, and\n75 cases of motor vehicle theft.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese criminal incidents are the result of digital information on\nsocial media and the rapid response from the Jakarta Metropolitan\nPolice,\u201d said Iman during a press conference at the Jakarta Metropolitan\nPolice headquarters, Friday (May 15, 2026).<\/p>\n
These include a mobile phone theft at the Halim Perdanakusuma\nSwimming Pool, East Jakarta, on March 25, 2026, and a theft of a safe\ncontaining Rp 52 million at a minimarket in Tambora, West Jakarta, on\nFebruary 22, 2026.<\/p>\n
Reports made through social media are important and can help the\npolice to arrest the perpetrators of these crimes.<\/p>\n
In the case of 5 out of the 103 suspects, officers had to take firm\naction to stop the perpetrators who were trying to escape and were using\nfirearms.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause five of the suspects were carrying five firearms, we took\nfirm and measured action,\u201d said Iman.<\/p>\n
Now, the 103 suspects are being held in custody at the Jakarta\nMetropolitan Police detention center.<\/p>\n
They will be charged under Article 307 of the Criminal Code regarding\nthe use of firearms, which carries a maximum penalty of 7 years, and\nArticle 591 for receiving stolen goods, which carries a threat of\nimprisonment of 4 years.<\/p>\n
Iman emphasised that perpetrators who are repeat offenders will be\ncharged with aggravated charges.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe all hope that at the time of sentencing in court, the penalties\nwill be increased because the person is a repeat offender,\u201d said\nIman.<\/p>\n
According to Iman, most of the crimes they handled occurred in the\nsurrounding areas such as Depok, Bekasi, and Tangerang.<\/p>\n
