        "content": "<p>Jakarta needs foreign investors<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta still needs local and foreign investors,<br>\nbut prefers high-tech investment, which is free from pollution<br>\nand needs limited space and water, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja<br>\nsays.<\/p>\n<p>Surjadi said at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding<br>\nbetween the Jakarta and London Chambers of Commerce and Industry<br>\non Monday that this policy is related to the capital's bid to<br>\nbecome a sister city to London.<\/p>\n<p>The documents were signed by Soekardjo Hardjosoewirjo, chief<br>\nof Kadin Jaya (the Jakarta Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and<br>\nhis British counterpart Alastar Dacre Lacy, the director for the<br>\nLondon Chamber of Commerce and Industry.<\/p>\n<p>Soekardjo told reporters the signing of the MOA followed the<br>\nsister-city relationship between London and Jakarta whose signing<br>\nwas conducted in May.<\/p>\n<p>Under the memorandum, Jakarta and London will cooperate in<br>\nseveral sectors, including commerce and industry; education,<br>\nscience and technology; transportation, communications and<br>\ntourism.<\/p>\n<p>The two cities also agreed to develop mutual understanding and<br>\nforge a stronger relationship which is beneficial to both.<\/p>\n<p>Lacy said through the cooperation the London chamber is not<br>\nonly seeking to promote British goods and services but also<br>\n\"understand the importance of a two-way trade\".<\/p>\n<p>He said he foresees great potential for goods produced by<br>\nIndonesian companies in Europe and England can be a focal point<br>\nfor marketing to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\"However, an ever watchful eye should be kept by Indonesian<br>\nmanufacturers on levels of price and quality,\" said Lacy.<\/p>\n<p>Lacy added he especially hopes that cooperation in workshops,<br>\neducation and transfer of technology could prominently develop<br>\nand strengthen the relationship between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>Based on records at city hall, England ranks sixth among<br>\nforeign investors in Jakarta in terms of the number of<br>\ninvestments. It is behind Japan, which tops the list, Hong Kong,<br>\nSingapore, Holland and Australia, but is ahead of Australia and<br>\nSouth Korea. The English businessmen handled 34 projects worth<br>\n$313 million from 1967 through March 1994. (jsk)<\/p>",
