JAKARTA (JP): Taiwanese businessman from small and medium
\nsized companies, representing the China External Trade Council,
\nare expected to visit Indonesia at the end of this month.<\/p>\n
The China Trade Council is a consortium of private
\nenterprises.<\/p>\n
David Y.S. Tzou, Information Division Director of the Taipei
\nEconomic and Trade Office here, told The Jakarta Post yesterday
\nthat the group's visit indicates the strong commitment of Taiwan
\nto improve economic cooperation with Indonesia.<\/p>\n
This month's trip follows the recent visits of two Taiwanese
\ntrade and investment delegations. The first group consisted of
\nexecutives from various government-owned enterprises and was led
\nby Deputy of the Minister of Economics Lee Shu-jou. The second
\nwere businessmen from the ruling Nationalist party and were led
\nby Tai-Ying Liu.<\/p>\n
According to Tzou, the results of the previous visits were
\nvery satisfactory, although more follow-up work had to be done to
\nsettle the details of future cooperation.<\/p>\n
\"Since this is the first time the parties have met, nothing is
\nsecure yet. After two or three more meetings -- depending on the
\npolicy of the respective government agencies -- I think we can
\nforesee more substantial forms of cooperation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Tzou said that he could not predict when the members of the
\ndelegations would establish joint ventures with Indonesian
\npartners.<\/p>\n
Members of the delegations were quoted yesterday by Kompas as
\nsaying that they planned to work with various state-owned
\ncompanies, including PT Krakatau Steel, PN Garam, a salt company,
\nThe State Electricity Company (PLN) and the Pertamina oil
\ncompany.<\/p>\n
Apart from plans to establish joint training projects designed
\nfor small and medium-scale firms in Indonesia, Taiwan will also
\nformulate a task force to conceive new Indonesian investment
\nplans.<\/p>\n
According to Lee, the investment climate in Indonesia is
\nfavorable for prospective Taiwanese investors.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia just needs to reduce the waiting period for
\ninvestors to obtain the permits for doing business,\" Lee said.<\/p>\n
Taiwan's gross national product (GNP) grew by an annual
\naverage of 15.5 percent between 1965 and 1990. Its GNP was
\nrecorded at $229 billion last year.(10)<\/p>",
