Jakarta Great Sales '97 opens throughout city<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakartans can find more tempting discounts now
\nbecause Jakarta Great Sales '97 begins today at 50 shopping
\ncenters and malls in conjunction with the city's' 470th
\nanniversary.<\/p>\n
The one-month event also simultaneously coincides with the
\n30th annual Jakarta Trade Fair and the annual school holidays.
\nDiscounts, which range from 5 percent to 70 percent, are offered
\nby 1,140 vendors and retailers.<\/p>\n
The shopping sales season was opened yesterday by Governor
\nSurjadi Soedirdja at Mal Taman Anggrek in Slipi, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The opening, which was enlivened by traditional dances as well
\nas modern ones, was also attended by chief coordinator Peter
\nSondakh, actress Rae Sita Supit, fashion designer Poppy Dharsono
\nand artist Guruh Soekarno Putra, son of the late president
\nSukarno.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said the discounts would definitely attract Jakarta
\nshoppers and boost the city's service industry.<\/p>\n
"Around 65 percent of city revenues come from the service
\nsector," he said, adding that Jakartans should be proud of local
\nproducts whose quality is as good as imported products.<\/p>\n
He also said that Jakarta would be a favorite tourist
\ndestination and trade center before the free trade era of 2003.<\/p>\n
Besides prestigious shopping malls such as Sarinah and Senayan
\nPlaza, other shopping centers, which usually sell
\nlocal products, also offer competitive prices.<\/p>\n
Those markets include hundreds of kiosks and department stores
\nin Jatinegara Market, East Jakarta, Pasar Minggu and Pasar
\nCipulir in South Jakarta, Bird Market in Jl. Pramuka, Pasar Senin
\nin Central Jakarta and Rawa Bening in Bekasi.<\/p>\n
Sondakh, who is also the president director of Hero
\nSupermarket, acknowledged that Jakarta Great Sales followed the
\nexample of sales events in Singapore.<\/p>\n
"Salespeople in Singapore are very knowledgeable about the
\nproducts they offer," he said.<\/p>\n
He added that organizers would try to improve the quality of
\nsalespeople.<\/p>\n
Sondakh added that the Singapore government fully supported
\nsimilar sales events there to increase the city-state's revenue.
