Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has called on residents to adopt household waste sorting practices immediately, stating it is non-negotiable. The provincial government is simultaneously preparing waste management infrastructure, including three waste-to-energy power plants and the full operation of the RDF Rorotan facility, to reduce the volume of waste sent to the Bantargebang landfill.

JAKARTA – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has called on Jakarta
residents to begin adopting the habit of sorting waste at home.

According to him, this practice cannot be postponed any further and
must be undertaken by all residents.

“Regarding waste, we will indeed prepare facilities for Jakarta
residents shortly. Regardless of preference, residents must begin
getting accustomed to sorting waste,” said Pramono when met in the Monas
area on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

To date, almost all waste from Jakarta has been disposed of at
Bantargebang without being sorted.

“Because first, the limitations of Bantargebang mean that all this
waste cannot be managed as it was before,” he said.

In addition to requesting residents to sort waste, the Jakarta
Provincial Government is also preparing waste treatment facilities. In
the near term, the government will decide on the development of three
waste-to-energy power plants, one of which will be located at
Bantargebang.

Additionally, the RDF Rorotan facility will also commence full
operations shortly.

“Currently, finalisation is underway not only for commissioning but
for full operation,” he said.

However, the capacity of RDF Rorotan will be adjusted to avoid
causing odour and disruption to neighbouring residents.

Waste sorting will be divided into four categories:

First, organic waste such as food scraps that can be made into
compost.

Second, recyclable waste such as plastic, paper, and metals.

Third, hazardous waste or toxic materials.

Fourth, residual waste or waste that cannot be processed further.

Using this approach, the volume of waste sent to Bantargebang can be
reduced and waste management in Jakarta will improve.
",
