Jakarta glitters with light campaign<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta at night. Colorful lights decorate
\nskyscrapers and strategic places to make Jakarta \"alive\" 24 hours
\na day.<\/p>\n
That is what the city government officials are dying to see,
\nat least over the coming few months when Jakartans celebrate the
\ncity's 468th anniversary and the nation's 50th Independence Day,
\nwhich falls on Aug.17.<\/p>\n

\nRais set the wheels in motion on Friday night when he switched on
\nthe decorative lamps surrounding the HI Roundabout in front of
\nHotel Indonesia.<\/p>\n
He was launching the Jakarta Indah di Malam Hari (beautiful
\nJakarta at night) campaign.<\/p>\n
\"Jakarta is already beautiful during the day and it will even
\nbe more beautiful if the city looks alive at night,\" Rais said.<\/p>\n
Rais said the owners or management of high-rise buildings can
\ndecide the lamp type or design for themselves.<\/p>\n
PLN, the state-owned electricity company, has granted a
\nspecial electricity rate for the decorative lamps installed
\noutside the buildings.<\/p>\n
\"PLN has decided to charge only one third of the usual price
\nand the city administration appreciates the policy,\" Rais said.<\/p>\n
There are about 34 decorative lamps, 17 lamps in the west,
\neight in the east, four in the south and five lamps in the north
\nside of the HI Roundabout.<\/p>\n
Rais also urged Jakartans to participate in this special
\nactivity by installing decorative lamps in front their houses.<\/p>\n
\"There are areas in the city where residents have not
\nparticipated in the activity, such as on Jl. Pintu Air, Central
\nJakarta, Karet and Manggarai in South Jakarta,\" Rais said. (yns)<\/p>",
