Jakarta garrison gets a new chief<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Military Chief Maj. Gen. Wiranto
\nyesterday installed Brig. Gen. Noerdin Yusuf as the new chief of
\nstaff of the Jakarta Garrison, replacing Maj. Gen. Yusuf
\nKartanegara.<\/p>\n
Noerdin, an old hand in military intelligence, will be largely
\nin charge of maintaining the discipline of troopers posted in
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
"I have confidence that the general will be able to carry out
\nthe task," Wiranto said when he inducted Noerdin. He added that
\nthe two of them went back together to their days at the National
\nMilitary Academy in Magelang, Central Java.<\/p>\n
Both Wiranto and Noerdin belong to the Academy's Class of
\n1968.<\/p>\n
After the ceremony yesterday, Noerdin received congratulations
\nfrom friends and colleagues, not only for his new appointment but
\nalso for his 51st birthday.<\/p>\n
Noerdin, who hails from Aceh, was previously inspector at the
\nTrikora Military Command which is based in Jayapura, Irian Jaya.
\nHis previous stints include assistant for intelligence at the
\nArmy Strategic Reserves Command and assistant for intelligence at
\nKopassus, the Army's special force.<\/p>\n
His predecessor at the Jakarta garrison, Yusuf Kartanegara,
\nhas been appointed as chief of the Diponegoro Military Command
\nbased in Semarang. Yusuf replaces Lt. Gen. Soeyono who is the
\nchief of socio-political affairs at the Armed Forces.<\/p>\n
The garrison is one of three such units that has been
\nestablished in Indonesian cities. The other two are in Bandung
\nand Surabaya.<\/p>\n
Among the guests present at the ceremony yesterday were Rear
\nAdmiral Widodo, chief of staff of the Western Armada, Brig. Gen.
\nSutiyoso, chief of staff of the Jakarta Military Command, and
\nBrig. Gen. Hamaminata, deputy chief of Jakarta Police. (emb)<\/p>",
