        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta East City Government has cleared\nillegal structures on Jalan H. Taiman Barat 1 RT 04 RW 02, Gedong Ward,\nPasar Rebo District, as an effort to restore the function of water\nchannels to optimal levels. \u201cWe continue to strive for residents\u2019\ncomfort and ensure that buildings are properly arranged so as not to\ndisrupt the function of the channels,\u201d said Jakarta East Mayor Munjirin\nwhen contacted in Jakarta on Friday. This step was taken because the\npresence of those semi-permanent structures was deemed to hinder water\nflow and trigger rubbish and debris accumulation, potentially causing\nflooding during rain. Meanwhile, Gedong Ward Secretary Edy Rusmanto\nexplained that the structure, measuring approximately 2x6 metres, was\npreviously used as a residence as well as a storage site for second-hand\ngoods. In fact, the building was often filled with rubbish and\nconstruction debris. \u201cThis building was previously used as an ojek base\nbut later shifted function to become a residence and storage for\nsecond-hand goods. This condition certainly disrupts the water channel\u2019s\nfunction,\u201d said Edy in Jakarta. Edy stated that this enforcement is part\nof environmental improvement as well as the government\u2019s commitment to\nmaintaining drainage infrastructure to function properly, especially in\nanticipating flooding and inundation. Before implementation, the ward\noffice had coordinated across sectors and ensured handling of social\naspects for the occupants. The process involved social services and\npopulation affairs elements to ensure the enforcement proceeded\nhumanely. \u201cWe held a meeting on 13 April, including calling in social\nand population affairs parties. So, this enforcement has gone through\nstages and considers residents\u2019 basic needs,\u201d Edy explained. The\nenforcement involved 80 combined personnel from PPSU, Satpol PP, Bina\nMarga, the Water Resources Sub-Department (SDA), and the Environment\nSub-Department. In addition to restoring the water channel\u2019s function,\nthis enforcement is a follow-up to reports from residents received\nthrough the Community Rapid Response System (CRM). Those complaints\nhighlighted the negative impacts of illegal structures on the\nsurrounding environment.
