Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno has underscored the importance of
the younger generation’s role in driving the creative industry,
particularly filmmaking, through the Road to Jakarta Youth Film Festival
(JYFF) 2026, held at the National Library of Indonesia on Thursday
(2/4). According to Rano, the initiative, conceived in collaboration
with the Bank Indonesia Representative Office for DKI Jakarta Province,
represents a concrete step to strengthen the filmmaking ecosystem in the
capital. “We appreciate Bank Indonesia’s initiative. JYFF is expected to
become a flagship programme to bolster Jakarta’s film industry, open up
collaboration opportunities, enhance talent quality, and produce works
capable of competing at national and global levels,” he stated. The
event, part of the Jakarta Kreatif Festival (JKF) 2026 series, was also
held in commemoration of National Film Day. It was attended by the Head
of the Bank Indonesia Representative Office for DKI Jakarta Province,
Iwan Setiawan, and featured national filmmakers such as Riri Riza and
Prilly Latuconsina in sessions for short film screenings and interactive
talkshows. Iwan revealed that the creative economy sector continues to
show positive growth trends and serves as one of the new sources of
growth. “The creative economy grew by 9.42 per cent annually in the
first semester of 2025. With Jakarta’s population dominated by
millennials and Gen Z at 50.5 per cent, the role of young people is
highly strategic as the engine of creativity and innovation,” he
explained. He added that the film industry has broad multiplier effects,
as it can drive other sectors such as tourism, culinary, fashion, and
transportation. Furthermore, films are considered effective in
strengthening the city’s image on a global scale, in line with the
vision of Jakarta as a cinema city. Under the theme “Jakarta Our City”,
JYFF 2026 is designed as a nurturing space as well as a competition for
students and university students through the Lensa Competition programme
and funding support via the Jakarta Film Fund for Students. Selected
works will later be showcased in the Jakarta Film Week 2026. Rano
emphasised that synergy between the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government,
Bank Indonesia, and all pentahelix elements must be continuously
strengthened to make the creative economy ecosystem increasingly robust
and sustainable. He hopes this event will not only produce audiences but
also young creators capable of making real contributions to the economy.
“Jakarta needs more creators. From here, we can build a creative,
inclusive, and globally competitive city identity,” he concluded.
",
