Jakarta branches against PPP Reform<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: All branches and the provincial chapter of the United
\nDevelopment Party (PPP) have pledged their allegiance to Chairman
\nHamzah Haz and oppose a move by their members to join a splinter
\ngroup called PPP Reform.<\/p>\n
\"For us, the planned declaration of PPP Reform reveals the
\nhidden intent to seek positions and vested interest,\" the chief
\nof South Jakarta branch, Amarullah Saleh, said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Amarullah read aloud a statement on behalf of executives of
\nthe party's branches and chapter, who also attended the meeting.<\/p>\n
Some of their colleagues, including chapter chairman Djafar
\nBadjeber, support the breakaway move, which originated from
\ndemands for changes in the party's board of executives.<\/p>\n
The PPP splinter group, led by noted Muslim cleric Zainuddin
\nMZ, has registered itself with the Ministry of Justice and Human
\nRights, and will declare its existence on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Amarullah labeled the planned declaration an attempt by a
\nsmall number of PPP officials and members to split the Muslim-
\nbased party, which finished third in the 1999 elections.<\/p>\n
He warned the breakaway group against using symbols and
\nattributes belonging to PPP, and asked them to relinquish their
