Jakarta Bintangs score historic win<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Bintangs beat the Malaysia Tigers by
\n50 points Saturday in an Australian Rules Football match at the
\nCibubur Scout Complex.<\/p>\n
The Bintangs claimed the inaugural Indonesia\/Malaysia
\nChallenge Cup after its 15. 9. - 99 to 7. 7. - 49 win.<\/p>\n
The Tigers were hot favorites to beat the host side and after
\nwinning the toss and electing to kick with a two goal breeze they
\nquickly went into attack.<\/p>\n
Captain coach Bryan Hammond kicked the Tigers' opening goal
\nbefore the Bintangs registered their first major through the
\ntrusty left boot of Steve Ludwig.<\/p>\n
Julian Clarke was providing a target up forward and after
\nbursting through three tackles he kicked truly from the 50 meter
\nline to bring up the Bitangs' second goal of the term.<\/p>\n
The Tigers hit back with two quick goals before Ludwig marked
\nstrongly and converted on the siren to level the score.<\/p>\n
Kicking with the wind in the second quarter the Bintangs
\ndefense, led by captain coach Tim Harkfoort, held firm against a
\ndetermined attack.<\/p>\n
Paul 'bajaj' Dugmore was negotiating some heavy traffic in the
\nmiddle of the ground and started the move which ended with Ludwig
\nkicking his third.<\/p>\n
By half time the home side had built a handy 26 point lead.<\/p>\n
The third term was a dour struggle as both sides tried to get
\nthe ascendancy.<\/p>\n
The competitive spirit and will to win of both teams became
\nevident as tempers frayed after some heavy clashes. The umpires
\nquickly stepped in to settle the players.<\/p>\n
The Bintangs went to the three-quarter-time break holding a
\nfour goal lead and with a fresh interchange bench looked to have
\nthe match in control.<\/p>\n
The final term belonged to the home side as it banged on six
\ngoals to the Tigers two to run out 50 point winners.<\/p>\n
For Malaysian national, Bruce Teh, it was his first taste of
\ninternational competition.<\/p>\n
\"I'm a soccer player but really enjoy Aussie Rules,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Although small, Teh stands tall in the courage department.<\/p>\n
\"It's a tough game and you have to run all day,\" Teh said.<\/p>\n
The win was the Jakarta side's first in international
\ncompetition and augurs well for the much awaited clash with
\nSingapore.<\/p>\n
The winner of that match can rightfully lay claim to the title
\nof ASEAN champion.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Bintangs (All Stars) Australian Football Club was
\nformed in 1995 and since inception has played international
\nmatches against both Singapore and Malaysia.<\/p>\n
It will hold its inaugural Annual General Meeting this Friday
\nat the Sheraton (airport) to elect office bearers. Nationals and
\nex-pats interested in Australian Rules Football are welcome to
\nattend.<\/p>\n
