Jakarta anticipate fires, floods<\/p>\n

A deafening siren rang out at City Hall on Wednesday afternoon.
\nWithin seconds, fire trucks, ambulances and police cars arrived
\nto put out the \"fire\" on the fourth floor, and rescue those
\n\"trapped\" inside.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of people were exiting the building, but they were
\nnot exactly scared. Indeed, many were laughing as they ran.<\/p>\n
In the drill, a fire was spotted on the fourth floor. Security
\nguards on that floor had tried to put it out with portable fire
\nextinguisher, but to no avail. The fire spread to the fifth
\nfloor, and then to the sixth floor, forcing the guards to call
\nthe fire department.<\/p>\n
At least 600 personnel of the Jakarta Fire Department, Public
\nOrder Agency, City Transportation Agency, City Health Agency,
\nIndonesian Red Cross and the police, arrived to put out the fire
\nand assist injured victims.<\/p>\n
At least 30 of the injured were evacuated from the 21-story
\nbuilding using ropes, and a tunnel made of cotton as a slide.
\nThey were taken in ambulances to nearby hospitals.<\/p>\n
Alternatively, survivors could jump from the building onto a
\nlarge inflated safety cushion.<\/p>\n
A chopper also took part in the drill to transport victims.<\/p>\n
The drill is part of a campaign organized by the
\nadministration from Oct. 6 to Oct. 12, to raise public awareness
\nof steps to be taken in an emergency, including floods and fires.<\/p>\n
\"Through the drill, we want to check whether or not the
\nexisting system works,\" Governor Sutiyoso said.<\/p>\n
\"We also want to demonstrate to the public how they can save
\nthemselves in an emergency,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Aside from the fire drill, the administration has asked
\nemergency workers to rehearse flood mitigation procedure.<\/p>\n
\"We will also hold a seminar, workshop and exhibition to raise
\nthe public's awareness of the importance of their participation
\nin mitigating disasters,\" City Public Order Agency head Soebagio
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Soebagio added that the administration had allocated Rp 300
\nmillion for the program, known as Pekan Sadar Bencana (A week of
\npublic awareness of disaster mitigation).<\/p>\n
