Jababeka Education Park: Where tomorrow's leaders come together<\/p>\n
Only a few technology-based cities are still concerned with
\neducation, and Jababeka, a new city about 35 km east of Jakarta,
\nis one of these few.<\/p>\n
More than anything else, this newly built city nurtures a
\nstrong ambition to be home to an integrated educational area,
\nwhere, with the full support from over 1,000 hightech-based
\ncompanies, students at all levels can undertake practical study.<\/p>\n
Spanning across 5,500 hectares, Jababeka City in Cikarang,
\nBekasi now boasts a population close to 1 million. This highly
\nintegrated area, that started construction in early 1989, wanted
\nto provide itself with international-level educational
\nfacilities, an aspiration that has now been translated into
\nreality with the establishment of Jababeka Education Park.<\/p>\n
Conceptually, this education center has as its origins in an
\nidea developed by Professor Brian Lee of Singapore's Nanyang
\nTechnological University. The establishment of Jababeka Education
\nPark is indeed a strategic step towards turning Jababeka into an
\neducational city. A number of schools, ranging from kindergartens
\nto international-level state and private universities, have been
\nestablished there.<\/p>\n
The educational institutions now established in this area are,
\namong others, President University, President Senior High School,
\nwhich is a boarding school, Industrial Mechanical Engineering
\nCollege (ATMI), Graduate School of Business Management (MBA) of
\nBandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Continuing Education
\nProgram (CEP) of the Engineering School of the University of
\nIndonesia, Gunadarma University, STIE Dwipayana, Proven Force
\nIndonesia of Productivity Improvement Consultant, as well as Al
\nAzhar and BPK Penabur kindergartens, elementary schools and
\njunior high schools.<\/p>\n
The international community has responded warmly to the
\nestablishment of President University, where English is the
\nmedium of instruction. Now in its third year, President
\nUniversity, which has its own student dormitory, can boast 500
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
About 200 of them have come from China and Vietnam, while the
\nrest come from various regions in Indonesia. Interestingly, 70
\npercent of the students at this university -- whose motto reads
\n\"Where Tomorrow's Leaders Come Together\" -- enjoy full
\nscholarships.<\/p>\n
Regarding efforts to foster and develop the intellectual
\nability of the students at President University, Professor Don
\nWatts, International Chancellor also a former Vice Chancellor
\nCurtin University & founder Bond University Australia, says that
\nthis university, which is made up of the School of Business, the
\nSchool of Engineering and the School of Computing, efforts are
\ngeared towards shaping students' scientific aptitudes in dealing
\nwith daily problems and providing them with the right
\ncompetencies to solve these problems.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the development of the students' personality is set
\ntowards turning them into graduates with strong, but populist,
\nleadership.<\/p>\n
Globalization is indeed unavoidable, and considerably impacts
\nthe economic and educational spheres. \"The presence of a
\nuniversity in an international-standard industrial area is
\ninevitable. Both establish a mutually beneficial symbiosis that,
\nat the same time, forms a synergy,\" said Professor Lee, also the
\ntechnical advisor of Jababeka Education Park.<\/p>\n
And, indeed, added Setyono Djuandi Darmono, president director
\nof PT Jababeka Tbk, Jababeka Education Park enjoys the full
\nsupport of no fewer than 1,115 domestic and multinational
\ncompanies operating in Jababeka Techno Park, such as Unilever,
\nICI, Samsung Electronics, Nippon EGI (Sumitomo), Mattel, United
\nTractor, Nissan, Kao Indonesia, Video Glass Indonesia, Akzo Nobel
\nand Stork.<\/p>\n
Students at all levels are always welcomed to do their
\npractical work and practice the theories they have learnt at
\nschool in these companies. In short, Jababeka Education has
\nbecome Indonesia's first technology-based education center.<\/p>\n
With the inclusion of the concept of link-and-match in the
\ncurriculum, the Education Park will produce highly trained
\ngraduates ready to take up career challenges.<\/p>\n
Facilities in all their variety are what PT Jababeka Tbk, the
\ndeveloper of Kota Jababeka, has always striven to provide. Aside
\nfrom the establishment of an industrial area, a housing estate
\nand an education park and a commercial area, Jababeka Central
\nBusiness District is now being developed on a 16-hectare plot of
\nland.<\/p>\n
With the opening in April 2003 of Plaza JB Mal Jababeka and
\nJababeka Center in this commercial area, Jababeka Central
\nBusiness District has become a center for a leisurely stroll with
\nstores offering a wide range of necessities ranging from fashion
\nand beauty products to cellular telephones and banking
\nfacilities.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the construction of the Capitol Business Park,
\nincluding the President Executive Club, is still going on and is
\nexpected to be completed early next year.<\/p>\n
Just a modest rural area two decades ago, Jababeka can now
\npride itself on being one of Indonesia's icons of development.
\nGardens, office compounds, posh houses, a first-class golf course
\n(Jababeka Golf & Country Club), a shopping center and hotels can
\nnow be found in this dynamic new city.<\/p>\n
The establishment of independent towns as satellite cities
\noften fails, often ending up as a burden on Jakarta because of
\nthe absence of equilibrium in the facilities provided.<\/p>\n
Aware of this fact, Kota Jababeka made sure that the
\nestablishment of its educational area, the Jababeka Education
\nPark, was not separated from its environment, meaning that
\ngraduates of those pursuing studies in this Center will be ready
\nto take up any employment opportunities that the industrial
\nenterprises operating in this city might offer.<\/p>\n
At present Jababeka is home to about 1,115 industrial
\nundertakings owned by companies from 21 countries, among others
\nJapan (104), Korea (122), Malaysia (22), Taiwan (35), Singapore
\n(27), the United States (19), Australia (12) and Britain (5).<\/p>\n
These industrial establishments are made up of 208 large-scale
\nindustrial undertakings or multinational corporations, 496 mid-
\nscale industrial undertakings or national corporations, 357 mid-
\nscale industrial businesses and 287 industrial undertakings owned
\nby small and medium enterprises.<\/p>\n
In Kota Jababeka, a Small and Medium Enterprises (UKM) Center
\nis now under construction. This center, said president director
\nof PT Jababeka Tbk, Setyono Djuandi Darmono, will accommodate
\nsmall- and medium-scale industrial undertakings in a special
\ncluster.<\/p>\n
These industrial undertakings, he said, are important as they
\ncan act as feeders to major industrial establishments. An
\nautomotive company, for example, does not need to outsource the
\nmanufacturing of their spare parts outside Jababeka. In the UKM
\nCenter there will be small-scale vendors that can supply the
\nautomotive company with this particular need.<\/p>\n
If you need trained and skilled human resources, they are
\navailable ranging from those with practical skills to experts.
\nThey are graduates from the educational institutions around Kota
\nJababeka, or, in particular, from Jababeka Education Park.
\nProfessor Brian Lee, the technical advisor to the Jababeka
\nEducation Park, says that this concept is similar to that adopted
\nby Singapore.<\/p>\n
On August 17, Professor Dr. Muliawati G. Siswanto, M.Eng.Sc.,
\nRector of President University, signed an MOU agreement with
\nProfessor Yohanes Surya, Ph.D from Asian Physics Olympiad (Apho).<\/p>\n
The MOU signing take place at President University Campus,
\ncompromise the development of President University International
\nCenter for Physic Olympiad, consists of 18 laboratories and
\ntraining camp, that will become the center for all the
\nparticipants of physic Olympiad from all over Indonesia.<\/p>\n
