PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) is developing the use of\ngreen energy as part of its efforts to strengthen Environmental, Social,\nand Governance (ESG) aspects within the nickel downstream industry.<\/p>\n
IWIP ESG Superintendent Xiaolin Wang stated that this move comes amid\nincreasing global market attention towards the sustainability of the\nsupply chains for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and critical minerals.\n\u201cIWIP has begun its journey towards green energy development,\u201d Xialin\nsaid during a discussion titled \u201cResponsible Downstreaming at Scale:\nLessons from North Maluku\u201d in Jakarta on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
He explained that IWIP is currently developing wind and solar power\nplants as part of its clean energy initiatives within the industrial\nestate. For wind power, Xiaolin noted that IWIP plans for a capacity of\napproximately 4 megawatts. He added that two to three wind turbine units\nhave begun construction, with some already integrated into the\nindustrial estate\u2019s power grid.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, IWIP is developing solar power through the utilisation\nof rooftop solar panels across the industrial park. Xiaolin mentioned\nthat the use of photovoltaic panels is still in the early stages of\ndevelopment within the IWIP area.<\/p>\n
In addition to wind and solar energy, the company has begun utilising\ndomestic waste to generate electricity through waste-to-energy\nfacilities. He noted that one waste-based power unit has already\nobtained the necessary government licences and permits to operate.<\/p>\n
This green energy development is also part of an Eco-Industrial Park\nproject conducted in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial\nDevelopment Organization (UNIDO). \u201cWe want to be part of a responsible\nnickel supply chain,\u201d said Xiaolin.<\/p>\n
According to Xiaolin, the project is aimed at enhancing energy\nefficiency, environmental management, and the long-term sustainability\nof the industrial estate. IWIP, located in Central Halmahera, North\nMaluku, is one of Indonesia\u2019s national nickel downstream hubs, featuring\nan integrated production chain ranging from mining to the processing of\nraw materials for EV batteries and stainless steel. The industrial\nestate encompasses Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) smelters, High\nPressure Acid Leach (HPAL) facilities, Nickel Pig Iron (NPI), Mixed\nHydroxide Precipitate (MHP), nickel sulphate, and electrolytic\nnickel.<\/p>\n
Based on United States Geological Survey (USGS) data, Indonesia\u2019s\nnickel production is projected to reach approximately 2.6 million tonnes\nby 2025, accounting for about 66.7 per cent of global production, making\nIndonesia the world\u2019s largest nickel producer. As the demand for EV raw\nmaterials rises, the global nickel industry faces increasing pressure to\nreduce emissions and adopt more environmentally friendly energy\nsources.<\/p>\n
During the forum, Xiaolin noted that industrial tenants within IWIP\nserve various markets and end-users, including the stainless steel and\nEV battery industries across multiple countries.
