        "content": "<p>A geology expert from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology\n(ITS), Dr Ir Amien Widodo, has urged citizens not to panic in response\nto information regarding an active fault in Surabaya that has gone viral\non social media. The fault has not yet been scientifically verified as\nactive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe existence of faults in the Surabaya region has been part of\nprevious research,\u201d said the adjunct lecturer from the Department of\nGeophysical Engineering in Surabaya on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>ITS, alongside the Geological Survey Centre of the Geological Agency\nunder the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of the\nRepublic of Indonesia, previously conducted research on fault maps in\nEast Java, which was published in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results of that research indicate the presence of two faults,\nnamely the Surabaya fault and the Waru fault,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Amien, both faults have the potential to be active and\nhave experienced movement in the past. The research findings are also\nconsistent with the Indonesian fault map compiled by the National\nEarthquake Study Centre (Pusgen) in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fault passing through Surabaya, Sidoarjo, to Bangkalan does\nexist, but it has not yet been verified as active,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasised that the existence of a fault does not automatically\nmean it can be categorised as an active fault. Determining such a status\nrequires further research based on evidence and scientific study.<\/p>",
