An expert from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) has\ncalled on the public to remain vigilant of Mount Semeru and Mount\nMerapi, amid activity at several Indonesian volcanoes occurring within a\nshort span of time. Not long ago, an eruption of Anak Krakatau spread\nvolcanic ash across an exceptionally wide area.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs for the volcanoes that need to be watched at the moment, I would\nsay Semeru and Merapi. Both deserve attention because they are located\nclose to centres of population,\u201d said Alutsyah Luthfian, an expert from\nthe ITS Department of Geophysical Engineering, in Surabaya, East Java,\non Monday.<\/p>\n
Fian, as he is known, said the simultaneous activity of several\nvolcanoes does not automatically indicate a direct connection, as each\nvolcano has its own system and characteristics.<\/p>\n
\u201cEach volcano has its own cycle and character. So when several\nvolcanoes become active within a short period, their activity is not\nnecessarily interrelated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to him, the proximity of eruption timings is not a\nsufficient basis to conclude that the activity of one volcano triggered\nthat of another. To determine whether there are links between volcanic\nactivities, he said, a study of geophysical data and the condition of\neach volcano\u2019s subsurface system is required.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou cannot simply observe that the timings are close together and\nthen conclude that one volcano triggered another.
