ITI stops classes after student clash<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): The authority of the Indonesian Institute of
\nTechnology (ITI) in Serpong decided on Wednesday to temporarily
\nhalt learning activities at the campus until Monday next week in
\na bid to lower tension between students from two rival schools at
\nthe institute.<\/p>\n
"We hope the day off can be a cooling down period for the
\nwarring students, especially in accordance with the beginning of
\nthe holy fasting month," said ITI rector Herkamoyo
\nSosrodiningrat.<\/p>\n
One student died during a fierce fight between the two groups
\non Saturday.<\/p>\n
Herkamoyo, however, said that the campus authority did not
\nthink of the material loss in the fray that started from a small
\ndispute in a football competition on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The body of the dead student, Sami Leonardo Turanang, 25, from
\nthe mechanical engineering school, has been flown to Balikpapan
\nin East Kalimantan for burial.<\/p>\n
The campus paid for all the expenses, the rector said.<\/p>\n
Police said Sami died on Sunday with severe wounds to many
\nparts of his body and head after being beaten during a brawl with
\nrivals from the electrical engineering school at the same
\ninstitute.<\/p>\n
The fight took place on Saturday during a music show on their
\ncampus.<\/p>\n
Upset with the death of their friend, students of the
\nmechanical engineering school took revenge on Monday by
\nvandalizing the workshop of the rival school.<\/p>\n
