The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP)\nIndonesia is pushing for the electrification of public transport, such\nas electric buses.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are four reasons why we are pushing for this to start with\npublic transport. The first is to maximise impact. An electric bus in\nJakarta can travel 200 kilometres in a single day, so the impact will be\nvery significant,\u201d said Gonggomtua Sitanggang, ITDP Southeast Asia\nDirector, in Jakarta on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The second reason, he continued, relates to cost savings. The\noperational costs of electric buses are already cheaper, particularly\nfor large buses and microbuses.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe third is ease of planning. The technology is actually not that\nnew. Planning is easier because bus routes are already clear,\nfrequencies are already clear, and stops are already clear. So it is\nrelatively easier for us to plan the use of new technology, including\nelectric buses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The final reason is the momentum for public transport reform. ITDP\ndoes not only want to replace conventional buses with electric buses,\nbut also wants this to serve as momentum for reforming or improving\npublic transport services.<\/p>\n
\u201cGiven that the costs are already cheaper, when we plan public\ntransport services, why not go straight to electric buses,\u201d said\nGonggomtua.<\/p>\n
Previously, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo set a target of\n10,000 electric, hydrogen, and hybrid buses operating in Jakarta by 2030\nas an effort to reduce emissions.<\/p>\n
He hopes that the presence of these buses will help reduce pollution\nin Jakarta.<\/p>\n
In addition to reducing emissions, TransJakarta previously stated\nthat a single electric bus has the potential to save the government up\nto Rp302 million per year in fuel subsidies.<\/p>\n
When calculated with several other aspects, the cost savings over 5.5\nyears of operation per unit could reach Rp3.9 billion, or the price of\none 12-metre electric bus.<\/p>\n
