        "content": "<p>A recent study from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB)\nconfirms that the air pollution problem in the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok,\nTangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) area cannot be resolved partially.\nAddressing air quality in this megapolitan region requires integrated\ncollaboration that transcends administrative boundaries and sectoral\negos.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Puji Lestari, Professor of Environmental Engineering and\nHead of the Air and Waste Management Expertise Group at ITB\u2019s Faculty of\nCivil and Environmental Engineering, explained that air quality in\nJabodetabek is heavily influenced by a combination of factors, ranging\nfrom heavy vehicles, logistics, commuter mobility, industrial activity,\nto power plant operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese findings show that the air quality issue in Jabodetabek cannot\nbe viewed from just one type of vehicle or one sector alone,\u201d said\nProfessor Puji in an official statement in Jakarta on Friday\n(21\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>Based on emissions inventory data, the study maps the differences in\nprimary pollution sources in each area. Cumulatively, greenhouse gas\nemissions in Jabodetabek are estimated to reach 88.53 million tonnes per\nyear. The largest contribution comes from the industrial sector at 35\nper cent, followed by power plants at 31 per cent, and the transport\nsector contributing 26 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPollution does not follow administrative boundaries, so our response\nmust also move beyond those boundaries. Jabodetabek needs to be managed\nas a single integrated air quality policy unit,\u201d Professor Puji\nstressed.<\/p>\n<p>Suzanty Sitorus, Executive Director of ViriyaENB, added that the ITB\nstudy results must be promptly translated into measurable emission\nreduction targets. She emphasised the importance of clear division of\nresponsibilities between regions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJabodetabek requires a single cross-regional air quality strategy\nframework that can be monitored and accounted for transparently,\u201d said\nSuzanty.<\/p>\n<p>In line with this, Gonggomtua E. Sitanggang, Southeast Asia Director\nof the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP)\nIndonesia, assessed that this study serves as a crucial basis for\nreforming the transport sector, which remains fragmented across regions.\nITDP plans to use this data to develop transport models that are more\neffective in reducing emissions based on evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The ITB research team provided a number of strategic recommendations\nto improve air quality in Jabodetabek. These findings are expected to\nbecome the primary reference for local governments in formulating Air\nQuality Protection and Management Plans, as stipulated in Environment\nMinistry Regulation No.\u00a05 of 2026.<\/p>",
