ITB grants Hartarto honorary doctoral degree<\/p>\n
BANDUNG, West Java (JP): Hartarto Sastrosoenarto, coordinating
\nminister for production and distribution, was awarded an honorary
\ndoctoral degree yesterday by the prestigious Bandung Institute of
\nTechnology (ITB).<\/p>\n
Hartarto, who was born in Surakarta, Central Java, 64 years
\nago, is the third person, after Indonesia's first president
\nSukarno and Soetaryo Sigit, to be granted an honorary doctorate
\nby the institute.<\/p>\n
This honorary doctoral degree is the first Hartarto has
\nreceived from a domestic institution, but the fifth granted to
\nhim by various universities around the world.<\/p>\n
Hartarto received honorary doctorates from Nagpur University
\nin India (1992), University of New South Wales in Australia
\n(1993), Nanyang University in Singapore (1995), Erasmus
\nUniversity (1995), and the Bernard Mandeville Foundation (1995),
\nboth in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n
Matthias Aroef, promoter and chairman of a special team
\nassigned to assess Hartarto's achievement, said that Hartarto has
\nsuccessfully helped transform Indonesia's economy from an
\nagriculture-led economy to an industry-led economy.<\/p>\n
Hartarto accomplished this distinct achievement when he served
\nas minister of industry for two consecutive terms from 1983 to
\n1993. During that period the country experienced a drastic
\nstructural change in its economy with rapid growth in industrial
\nand non-oil exports.<\/p>\n
\"During his two-term tenure as minister of industry from 1983
\nto 1993, there were many changes he made for the country,\"
\nMatthias said at yesterday's ceremony, which was led by the
\ninstitute's rector Wiranto Arismunandar.<\/p>\n
During the period from 1983 to 1993, Indonesia's annual non-
\noil exports grew from US$5 billion, or 23.67 percent of the
\ncountry's total exports, to $27.07 billion, representing 73.51
\npercent of total exports.<\/p>\n
During the same period, annual exports of industrial products
\nincreased from $3.21 billion or 64.4 percent of the country's
\ntotal non-oil exports, to $23.29 billion, which accounted for
\n86.03 percent of total non-oil exports.<\/p>\n
\"During the time when Indonesia's industry was growing at
\nextra speed, Indonesia was referred to internationally as the
\nastonishing rising star,\" Matthias said.<\/p>\n
When Hartarto assumed the position of minister of industry in
\n1983, Indonesia's economy was in danger of stagnation. To avoid
\nthis, Hartarto and other ministers involved with the economy
\nintroduced deregulation measures.<\/p>\n
To stimulate industrial growth, Hartarto spearheaded the
\ndrafting of an industrial bill, which was passed into law by the
\nHouse of Representatives in 1984.<\/p>\n
\"His strategy stopped the stagnation,\" Matthias said at the
\nceremony, which was attended by academics, businesspeople and 11
\ncabinet ministers, including Coordinating Minister for Political
\nAffairs and Security Soesilo Soedarman, Minister\/State Secretary
\nMoerdiono, State Minister of Investment Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo,
\nMinister of Manpower Abdul Latief, State Minister of Food Ibrahim
\nHassan, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Hayono Isman and
\nMinister of Education and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro. (rid)<\/p>",
