A team from the Geological Engineering programme at Institut\nTeknologi Bandung (ITB) has won the Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) 2026, a\nprestigious international competition organised by the American\nAssociation of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). According to a press release\nfrom the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Washington received on\nThursday (20\/8), the award was presented on Monday, 17 August 2026,\ncoinciding with the celebration of Indonesia\u2019s Independence Day, during\nthe AAPG IMAGE 2026 conference in Houston, Texas, USA. In addition to\nthe title, the ITB team received a prize of USD 1,000 (approximately\nRp17.8 million).<\/p>\n
Indonesia\u2019s Ambassador to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo, who\nis also an alumnus of ITB\u2019s Geological Engineering programme, welcomed\nthe victory. \u2018May this win inspire other Indonesian students and serve\nas a gateway to success and brilliant professional careers in Indonesian\npetroleum geology,\u2019 said Indroyono.<\/p>\n
The ITB Geological Engineering team consisted of five postgraduate\nstudents: Arieq Bagus Putradinanti, Dinda Putri Khamisah, Mohammad\nMaghanthis Taqy, Fathan Khoiri Nujaih Siregar, and Hammam Muhammad,\nunder the supervision of Prof.\u00a0Benyamin Sapiie. The victory is regarded\nas evidence that Indonesian students have the capacity to compete on the\nworld\u2019s academic and professional stage.<\/p>\n
The Imperial Barrel Award demands not only mastery of geological\ntheory but also analytical sharpness, the ability to read and integrate\nsubsurface data, teamwork, and the capacity to present scientific\narguments effectively before experts and industry practitioners. The\naward was established in 1976 by Imperial College London, one of the\nworld\u2019s leading institutions in science, technology, and engineering.\nThe term \u2018Imperial\u2019 refers to that institution, while \u2018barrel\u2019 is a unit\nclosely associated with the oil and gas industry.<\/p>\n
From the outset, the competition has been designed to hone geoscience\nstudents\u2019 abilities in evaluating subsurface energy resource potential.\nParticipants from various universities receive a subsurface data package\nthat may include seismic data, oil and gas well information, regional\ngeology, and geochemical elements. This data must then be analysed to\nproduce interpretations regarding resource potential, geological risks,\nand development recommendations.<\/p>\n
The challenge requires participants to work like a professional team.\nThey must divide roles, integrate various types of data, construct\ntechnical arguments, draw conclusions within a limited time, and present\nthem convincingly before a jury of experts and practitioners. The IBA is\ntherefore considered important for shaping future geoscientists entering\nvarious energy sectors. The competencies honed in this competition are\nrelevant not only to the oil and gas industry but are also increasingly\nimportant in geothermal development, carbon capture and storage (CCS),\nand other fields requiring deep understanding of subsurface\nconditions.<\/p>\n
The ITB team\u2019s victory also carries broader significance for\nIndonesia. As a country with extraordinary geological complexity,\nIndonesia has numerous sedimentary basins, hydrocarbon resources,\ngeothermal potential, and tectonic dynamics that require excellent human\nresources. These natural riches cannot be supported by physical\nresources alone. Indonesia needs a generation of scientists and\nprofessionals capable of understanding theory, processing data\naccurately, assessing opportunities and risks, and making science-based\ndecisions. ITB\u2019s achievement in Houston demonstrates that such capacity\nis growing in Indonesia.
