ITB alumni to elect chairman<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The 32,000-strong alumni association of the
\nBandung Institute of Technology (ITB) begins its fifth congress
\ntoday to elect a new chairman.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued here yesterday, the alumni association
\nsaid the leading candidates for the seat include businessman
\nFadel Muhammad, head of the Agency for the Assessment and
\nApplication of Technology Zoehal, head of the Indonesian
\nInstitute of Sciences Cahyono and former head of the state-owned
\ntelephone company Cacuk Sudaryanto.<\/p>\n
The election of the new chairman for the 1997\/2001 term will
\nbe held at the end of the congress on Friday in Bandung, West
\nJava.<\/p>\n
President Soeharto is scheduled to open the congress at the
\nState Palace here today.<\/p>\n
ITB is one of the country's most prestigious schools with a
\nlong list of celebrated alumnis who have either left their mark
\non Indonesian history or have distinguished themselves in their
\nrespective fields.<\/p>\n
They include Indonesia's first president Soekarno, head of the
\nIndonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Aburizal Bakrie,
\nbusiness tycoon Ciputra along with no less than eight members of
\nthe current cabinet, among them State Minister of National
\nPlanning Ginandjar Kartasasmita and the Coordinating Minister for
\nPeople's Welfare Azwar Anas.<\/p>\n
The congress, held under the theme Indonesia Rises, ITB is
\nReady, will be attended by 350 representatives from various ITB
\nalumni branches across the country.<\/p>\n
A slew of activities, including alumni meetings and seminars,
\nwill also be held during the week in Bandung. (mds)<\/p>",
