We all know that diamonds are a girl's best friend, but what
\nabout all the other gemstones? There are many meanings contained
\nin your choice of colored stones for jewelry, apart from the
\nmessages of status and money they give off to others.<\/p>\n
Precious and semiprecious gems also represent love, power,
\npurity and wisdom.<\/p>\n
Gemologist\/jewelry designer Betty Gunawan said local gem
\nlovers were familiar with only one third of the existing stones,
\nsuch as diamonds and sapphires.<\/p>\n
Trends in the past few years have also brought the other
\ncolored gems to a wider audience.<\/p>\n
\"Like sapphires, topaz and coral are also gaining popularity
\nbecause leading jewelry designers have been using them in their
\ndesigns,\" she said.<\/p>\n
\"And in Indonesia, the trend is going back to China and jade
\nis making a comeback.\"<\/p>\n
Apart from the mainstay of diamonds, other transparent colored
\nstones, such as amethyst, zircon, ruby, topaz, citrine,
\naquamarine and tourmaline, can be cut into different shapes to
\nbring out their sparkle.<\/p>\n
Among the well-known cuts include diamond, emerald and mixed,
\nas well as other fancy shapes like baguette, square, antique cuts
\n(consisting of rectangular antique cut and square antique cut)
\nand emerald cuts (rectangular step cut and square step cut).<\/p>\n
\"I believe there are other variations since people have become
\nmore creative and introduced other designs to the market,\" said
\nthe graduate of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).<\/p>\n
Whether buying for an investment or pleasure, a buyer should
\nkeep in mind certain points.<\/p>\n
Gem value is determined by several factors, which include
\nrarity of the gem or whether it is certain type gem from the same
\ntype, its colors, size and degree of clarity.<\/p>\n
When buying gemstones, the only way to make sure that you are
\ngetting original items is by purchasing them from reputable
\njewelers.<\/p>\n
\"You have to be able to trust to your jeweler. This is
\nimportant. Professional jewelers can equip their products with
\nlab-based certification of origin based on customers' requests,\"
\nshe said..<\/p>\n
Some gems, like sapphires, have similar hues to other colored
\nstones, like topaz or aquamarine, and the similarity may go
\nunnoticed by unskilled or uneducated jewelers.<\/p>\n
\"This kind of thing will not happen at reputable stores
\nbecause they have the knowledge and the proper tools to determine
