        "content": "<p>Islamic school opens amid controversy<\/p>\n<p>BANDUNG: Mayor Aa Tarmana officially opened on Tuesday a new<br>\nIslamic boarding school (pesantren) built on the notorious<br>\nSaritem red-light district complex, despite ongoing controversy.<\/p>\n<p>The new boarding school, named At-Taubah (repentance), with<br>\nits 50 santri (students) is expected to gradually decrease the<br>\nnumber of prostitutes in the complex, which was established<br>\nduring the Dutch colonial era.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor proposed building the pesantren in the area. The<br>\nmayoralty constructed a three-story building (for the boarding<br>\nschool) on a plot of land bought from locals for Rp 380 million<br>\ntwo months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Since the building of the school was made public the number of<br>\nprostitutes in the complex has been decreasing.<\/p>\n<p>Chief of the neighborhood Udin Suparman said there were now<br>\nabout one hundred prostitutes in the complex. &quot;There were more<br>\nthan 250 in the past.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged that conflicts between santri and the Saritem<br>\nvisitors had erupted. &quot;I don&apos;t know how to deal with it when<br>\nconflicts happen,&quot; he said.
