Nutrition experts say dates contain soluble and insoluble fibre that can support healthy digestion and bowel movements, though there is no scientific evidence that eating three in the morning is optimal. The timing of consumption matters little, as the benefits remain the same whenever dates are eaten. A small study found that people who ate seven dates daily for three weeks had more frequent bowel movements.

There is a common belief that eating three dates every morning can
help improve digestion and support metabolic health. But is this claim
true?

Nutrition expert Avery Zenker said dates contain fibre and a range of
nutrients that can support digestion, provide energy and help regulate
blood sugar. However, there is no scientific evidence that breakfast is
the best time to eat dates.

“There is no specific evidence that three dates in the morning is the
best thing. As for portion size, three dates can be a reasonable amount,
but that does not mean you cannot consume more or less than that,”
Zenker said, as quoted by Very Well Health on Saturday (5/9/2026).

If someone enjoys dates and wants to eat them in the morning, there
is nothing stopping them. Likewise, eating dates at midday or in the
afternoon will still deliver the same benefits to the body.

“Eating dates in the morning can be beneficial as an energy boost,
especially before physical activity. Dates can also be a good choice in
the afternoon or evening, particularly if consumed as a substitute for
processed carbohydrates,” Zenker said.

One of the main components of dates that may support digestive health
is fibre. Dates contain both soluble and insoluble fibre. Three Medjool
dates provide around 5 grams of total fibre.

Theresa DeLorenzo, a nutrition expert from Russell Sage College,
explained that insoluble fibre helps promote healthy bowel movements.
Meanwhile, soluble fibre can help keep cholesterol levels under
control.

“Fibre can also add bulk to stools and help ensure that food and
digestive waste keep moving through the digestive tract,” she said.

There is a small study that found benefits for bowel movement
frequency. In that study, people who consumed seven dates every day for
three weeks experienced more frequent bowel movements. Even so, the
study did not prove that three dates is a specific amount that is most
effective for digestion.
",
