Is Ghalib really a chicken?<\/p>\n
Was the presentation of a hen from students to Attorney
\nGeneral A.M. Ghalib really necessary? Do the students really
\nbelieve that a live hen truly represents what he is?<\/p>\n
Since he was appointed by President B.J. Habibie to head the
\nAttorney General's Office, Ghalib has done little to uphold
\njustice during the reform era, especially the cases that are
\nvulnerable to the current New Order-styled government. The slow
\nhandling of cases such as the Trisakti shooting, Semanggi
\nincident and Soeharto's corrupt practices are indeed an
\nindication of his cowardice in the face of bigger forces -- the
\nArmed Forces and Soeharto.<\/p>\n
As the head of the Attorney General's Office, Ghalib is
\nobliged to uphold justice and try those who committed corruption,
\ncollusion and nepotism (known by the Indonesian acronym KKN), as
\nmentioned in a decree of the recent People's Consultative
\nAssembly (MPR), and those involved in the shooting of students
\nand innocent people during the New Order era up to now.<\/p>\n
The cases listed below, among others, will serve as a reminder
\nto Ghalib of the agenda for conducting investigations. Some of
\nthe cases are already \"half-open\" so that there should be no
\nreason for not doing or prolonging the process of investigation,
\neven though there are indications of government or military
\nleaders' involvement in them.
\n * The Tanjung Priok massacre in 1984.
\n * Haur Koneng incident in Lampung.
\n * Santa Cruz massacre in November 1991 in East Timor.
\n * The July 27, 1996 incident at the Indonesian Democratic Party<\/p>\n
(PDI) headquarters in Jakarta.
\n * Murders and rapes of civilians and other military repression in<\/p>\n
Aceh.
\n * KKN-related cases involving Soeharto, his family and cronies.
\n * Murder of Bernas journalist Udin in Yogyakarta in 1996.
\n * Kidnapping of student activists linked to Prabowo and his men.
\n * Trisakti shooting in May 1998.
\n * Murders of reputed black magic practitioners in Banyuwangi,<\/p>\n
East Java.
\n * Semanggi incident in November 1998.
\n * The legitimacy of civilian security guards deployed during the
\nSpecial Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) in
\nNovember 1998.<\/p>\n
Mr. Ghalib will indeed be considered by many as \"chicken\" if
\nhe fails to take speedy and concrete steps in handling those
\ncases in the efforts to uphold justice. Continuous protests and
\nturbulence will only make the situation worse, and are
\ndetrimental to our ailing economy.<\/p>\n
