        "content": "<p>IRRI boosts rice output<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (AFP): The declining productivity of Asia&apos;s intensively<br>\nirrigated rice fields could be reversed by using new nutrient<br>\nmanagement techniques, the International Rice Research Institute<br>\n(IRRI) said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>IRRI said its &quot;site-specific integrated, nutrient management<br>\napproach&quot;, applied in 207 farms in China, India, Indonesia, the<br>\nPhilippines, Thailand and Vietnam, had increased rice yields in<br>\nmany of the areas.<\/p>\n<p>In the first year, yields rose from an average 5.17 tons per<br>\nhectare to 5.74 tons, with about 25 percent of the farms enjoying<br>\nyields of six tons per hectare, the Philippine-based institute<br>\nsaid in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>In the second year, at least 40 percent of the farms were<br>\nposting yields of six tons per hectare despite the effects of the<br>\nEl Nio weather phenomenon.<\/p>",
