        "content": "<p>Irianese urged to channel demand<\/p>\n<p>JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya (JP): Governor Freddy Numberi urged<br>\npeople on Wednesday to channel their demand for independence<br>\nthrough the Provincial Legislative Council instead of hoisting<br>\nthe West Papuan flag on Dec. 1.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;They could write down their demand and submit it to the<br>\ncouncil. The legislators will deliver the demand to the central<br>\ngovernment,&quot; Freddy said.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that hoisting separatist flags would provoke fresh<br>\noutbreaks of unrest in the province.<\/p>\n<p>Freddy, who is state minister of administrative reforms, was<br>\ncommenting on a plan by Irianese to raise the West Papuan flag on<br>\nDec. 1 in a move to express their independence demand.<\/p>\n<p>The governor also promised to send five or six representatives<br>\nto Jakarta to have talks with President Abdurrahman Wahid.<\/p>\n<p>People in Nabire, Sorong and Merauke have decided to execute<br>\nthe plan, while those in Jayawijaya have rejected it.
